Heute vormittag habe ich meine Dissertation eingereicht. :-) Wooohoo! Die Freude ist groß, sehr groß!

Auf dem Weg zum Doktor fehlt jetzt im Wesentlichen noch die Verteidigung/Prüfung und die anschließende Veröffentlichung der Arbeit.

Ach, und wir hatten es doch hier und hier mal von Eingangszitaten für Doktorarbeiten. Ich habe mich letztendlich für

entschieden. Es stammt aus dem Calvin-und-Hobbes-Comic von Bill Watterson vom 23. 04. 1993.

Apparantly, the following three, very wise observations circulate as Harvard Law I-III:

1. Under the most rigourously controlled conditions of pressure, temperature, volume, humidity, and other variables, the sample will do as it damn well pleases.
2. A couple hours in the library can frequently be saved by a few months in the lab.
3. To figure out how long a project is going to take, make a reasonable estimate, multiply by ten and switch to the next higher time unit.

So true.

The recent conversation reminded me of some more great quotes from Bill Watterson’s Calvin & Hobbes that are more or less related to science, empirical work or writing (theses), or can at least well be used in that context. All of the following was “said” by Calvin:

That’s the whole problem with science. You’ve got a bunch of empiricists trying to describe things of unimaginable wonder.

How can something seem so plausible at the time and so idiotic in retrospect?

Reality continues to ruin my life.

I realized that the purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure reasoning, and inhibit clarity.

Curiosity is the essence of the scientific mind.

I figure the last two (or three ;-) would be decent quotes to start my PhD thesis with.

Manchmal findet man in einer Diplom- oder Doktorarbeit nach dem Titelblatt erst mal eine Seite mit einem tollen Zitat. Zum Beispiel habe ich an solcher Stelle schon gelesen:

iucundi acti labores

Durchaus passend, heißt das aus dem zweiten Buch Ciceros De finibus bonorum et malorum stammende Zitat übersetzt doch “angenehm sind erledigte Arbeiten”.

Schon seit meiner Diplomarbeit finde ich allerdings, dass es viel größeres Kino wäre, anstelle eines solchen getragenen lateinischen Zitats die in den vorhergehenden Beiträgen vorgestellte Beobachtung aus Calvin and Hobbes zu verwenden. :-) Werde ich in meiner Dissertation aber genausowenig machen, wie ich es in meiner Diplomarbeit gemacht habe. (Wäre ja auch in beiden konkreten Fällen inhaltlich nicht angebracht.)

Gestern habe ich dann auf einer Werbekarte für Stirb Langsam 4 aber ein noch viel besseres Zitat gesehen. ;-) Von John McLane aus Stirb Langsam I:

Wie bin ich bloß in diese Scheiße geraten?
